The rules
One month later for every few months of birth
On 13 September 2024 the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress approved the State Council measures on gradually raising the statutory retirement age, in force from 1 January 2025. Article 1: for men and for women whose statutory age was 55, the age rises by one month every four months, to 63 and 58; for women whose age was 50, it rises by one month every two months, to 55.
In terms of birth dates, men born from January 1965 are affected. Those born January to April 1965 retire one month later; each further four months of birth adds a month, and men born in September 1976 or later retire at 63, 36 months later than before. Women previously retiring at 55 follow the same pattern from January 1970, reaching 58 for those born in September 1981 or later. Women previously retiring at 50 start from January 1975 with one month for every two months of birth, reaching 55 for those born in November 1984 or later. The calculator uses this pattern and agrees with the tables in annexes 1 to 3 month by month.
Minimum contributions rise from 15 to 20 years
Article 2: from 1 January 2030 the minimum contribution period for a monthly basic pension rises from 15 years by six months a year to 20 years. According to annex 4 it is 15 years for retirement from 2025 to 2029, 15 years 6 months in 2030, 17 years 6 months in 2034, and 20 years from 2039. People who reach retirement age without enough years can keep contributing or make a lump-sum payment. The calculator shows the minimum for the year you retire.
Flexible retirement
Article 3: once the minimum contribution period is met, a worker may choose to retire up to three years early, but not before the old statutory age of 60 for men and 55 or 50 for women. After reaching statutory age, a worker may retire up to three years later if the employer agrees. Nobody may be forced to choose a retirement age. The "earliest" and "latest" rows apply these limits.
Examples
| Group and birth month | Statutory age | Retirement | Delay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Man, January 1965 | 60 years 1 month | February 2025 | 1 month |
| Man, September 1976 | 63 years | September 2039 | 36 months |

A man born in March 1980 reaches statutory retirement age, 63, in March 2043. With enough contributions he could retire at 60, in March 2040, when the minimum is already 20 years; with his employer's agreement he could work until 66, in March 2046.
Limits
- Results are to the month. The exact date for the retirement procedure is set by the local social insurance office.
- Workers underground, at height, in high temperatures or in especially heavy physical work, and those working in high-altitude regions, may qualify for early retirement under article 8. The results here do not apply to them.
- Articles 1 and 3 both say that where the state provides otherwise, those rules apply.
- Flexible early retirement requires the minimum contribution period. The calculator does not know your actual record.
- It covers the retirement age only, not the amount of pension.
